What Is an Eye Emergency?
Any eye emergency can be any urgent problem affecting your eyes or sight. We can help by evaluating or treating various conditions, including eye injuries, infections, or sudden vision loss.
It’s crucial you contact the appropriate healthcare provider. If your general health is at risk or you experience significant bleeding, immediately visit a hospital emergency room. For all other eye-related issues, even foreign objects stuck in the eye, Urban Optique & Eyecare can help.
Don’t wait to receive help. Symptoms can worsen without treatment, leading to vision impairment or blindness. When you experience sudden vision changes or severe eye discomfort, contact us.
Different Types of Eye Emergencies
We provide prompt care and treatment of a variety of eye emergencies, including trauma to the eye, chemical contact, sudden vision loss or changes, and eye infections.
By contacting us as soon as possible after the incident, we can provide guidance on next steps, first aid, and direct you to visit our office or your nearest emergency room. If your emergency occurs outside of our regular business hours, please proceed to your nearest emergency room for timely treatment.
Eye trauma includes injuries to the eye or the area around the eye. Blunt force trauma, like a blow to the eye area, and penetrating trauma, like a foreign object piercing the eye, should be assessed by an eye doctor.
When a foreign object is stuck, you should limit eye movement as much as possible. Avoid touching the eye, and do not use instruments (like tweezers) to remove the object from the eye.
Common foreign objects, like eyelashes or dust, may be washed away with blinking and tear flow. However, blinking can cause sharp objects—big or small—to cut the eye’s surface. Avoid blinking if a large or sharp foreign object is stuck in the eye.
Contact us so we can help remove the object safely.
Chemical eye injuries can result from interactions with aerosols, liquids, or fumes. Accidents can happen with household items or workplace materials.
Symptoms of chemical exposure can include:
- Burning sensation
- Blurred vision
- Redness or swelling (eye or eyelid)
- Eye irritation or pain
- Excessive eye watering
If a chemical touches the eye or surrounding area, immediately flush your eyes with clean water for at least 15 minutes. After flushing the eye, contact us for emergency care.
Sudden vision changes or vision loss can indicate a severe eye problem. Whether you experience sudden blurry vision or complete blindness, contact us. The vision impairment may indicate a medical condition, eye problem, or progression of an eye disease. Acting fast can help save sight.
Conditions causing sudden vision changes include:
- Acute angle-closure glaucoma
- Concussion
- Retinal detachment
- Severe eye infections or inflammation
- Stroke or a transient ischemic attack (TIA)
- Wet macular degeneration
Infections such as conjunctivitis (pink eye) need prompt treatment as well. Symptoms of an eye infection include itching or burning, swollen eyelids, sensitivity to light, pink discoloration of the whites of the eye(s), excessive tearing, or discharge that is sticky and yellow, watery, or stringy.
If you experience any symptoms of an eye infection, contact us for an appointment. We will see you as soon as possible to examine your eyes, determine the cause of the infection, and prescribe treatment, including medications to clear up the infection.
Eye Emergency First Aid: Dos and Don’ts
If you experience an injury to the eye or chemical contact, acting fast can help preserve your vision. Even if the injury does not cause obvious damage to your eye, it is always a good idea to be assessed by an optometrist or other health care provider to make sure there are no internal injuries you cannot see.
While you prepare yourself to seek medical attention, there are a few first aid steps you can take to help protect your vision.
What to Do in an Eye Emergency
- Do flush the eye for at least 15 minutes in the case of chemical contact
- Do limit eye movement as much as possible
- Do avoid touching the eye with your hands or other instruments (like tweezers)
- Do cover the eye lightly with a sterile cloth or piece of gauze to protect it
What to NOT Do in an Eye Emergency
- Do not apply an over-the-counter medication
- Do not rub the eye or apply pressure
- Do not put in a contact lens
- Do not remove a contact lens (except in the case of a chemical splash)
- Do not remove an object stuck in the eye
